Hong Kong Practical Tips

Before you visit Hong Kong, here is everything you need to know to make your trip smooth, safe, and enjoyable. From currency and weather to Wi-Fi and safety, we have got you covered.

Currency and Money

The Hong Kong Dollar (HKD) is pegged to the US Dollar at approximately HK$7.8 to US$1. Cash is still king in Hong Kong, especially at street markets and local restaurants. Credit cards are widely accepted in hotels, malls, and chain restaurants. ATMs are everywhere.

Weather and When to Visit

Hong Kong has a subtropical climate. The best time to visit is October to December and March to April, when temperatures are mild and humidity is lower. Summer (June to August) is hot, humid, and typhoon-prone. Winter (January to February) is cool but rarely cold. Always check the current weather in Hong Kong before your trip.

Time Zone

Hong Kong operates on Hong Kong Time (HKT), which is UTC+8. There is no daylight saving time. Check the current time in Hong Kong now.

Language

Cantonese is the primary spoken language, but English is an official language and is widely spoken in tourist areas, hotels, restaurants, and by MTR staff. Street signs, MTR maps, and government websites are bilingual.

Power and Electricity

Hong Kong uses UK-style three-pin plugs (Type G) at 220 volts and 50 Hz. Bring a universal adapter if your devices use different plugs. Most hotels provide adapters on request.

Wi-Fi and Internet

Free Wi-Fi is available at all MTR stations, most shopping malls, many restaurants, and public areas through the "Wi-Fi.HK" network. You can also buy a local SIM card at the airport or any convenience store. 5G coverage is excellent across the city.

Tipping

Tipping is not a strong custom in Hong Kong. A 10% service charge is often added to restaurant bills automatically. You can round up taxi fares or leave small change, but it is never expected.

Water

Tap water in Hong Kong is treated to World Health Organization standards and is technically safe to drink. However, most locals prefer bottled or boiled water due to old building pipes. Bottled water is cheap and widely available.

Safety

Hong Kong is one of the safest cities in the world. Violent crime is extremely rare. As with any major city, keep an eye on your belongings in crowded areas like markets and on public transport. Emergency number is 999.

Visas

Visitors from most Western countries, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and Malaysia can enter Hong Kong visa-free for periods ranging from 7 to 180 days. Mainland Chinese citizens require a special permit. Always check the Immigration Department website for the latest requirements.

Smoking

Smoking is banned in all indoor public places, including restaurants, bars, and MTR stations. It is also illegal to smoke on beaches, in parks, and at bus stops. Fines can be hefty.
